Chris Christie Speech (A teacher’s response)

As a Special Education/K-5 teacher, I am aware of IDEA 2004 which states that children are supposed to get a free and appropriate education. I was layed off this year, however my students were successful. It is outrageous that someone would say that there is not help available for a child with a learning disability. I am well trained. I had a professor in college who was dyslexic. Like Christie, my blood boils when I here poor excuses. Of course there are people who do no do their job. I was fortunately one of those teachers who made strides. My students passed a state assessment this year. I am not tenure. I was laid off because of the economy, but as I hear this video I am appalled. I often question, what is the reason behind laying me off. Is it because I care so much about doing my job the right way? Or is there another motive? Like Chris Christie I would want my children to have a teacher that shows results.  I am from 1 of 8 schools from a failing district that turned this around. My parents from my classroom have called me raving about their children. They told me, “Ms. G. I do not know how you did it, but my child is getting skipped to another grade. Everything on that test is too easy for her.” Another student of mine is also helping their college cousin in school. Until this day, and beyond I will always question, “why did I get layed off when schools receive this much funding for programs. Was there an alternative motive? Like Christie Christie says there are rotten people everywhere.
